The regulations for energy drinks may be about to be tightened, writes Råd & Rön.
Today, there is no maximum limit for caffeine content and no age limit for buying the drinks.
The magazine Råd & Rön has tested the caffeine content of 25 energy drinks on the Swedish market and found that almost half contain so much caffeine that they would not be allowed in Denmark and Norway.
– “We are developing advice where we are looking at a recommended age limit for energy drinks,” Sabina Litens Karlsson, toxicologist and nutritionist at the Swedish National Food Agency, told the newspaper.
Today, Sweden has neither a maximum limit for caffeine content nor an age limit for buying energy drinks, although many stores in the grocery trade have set a 15-year limit for buying the products. Sabina Litens Karlsson says that an 18-year limit would be needed if you look at how much a person can drink without affecting sleep and have a safe consumption.
